19 September 2023 : In a recent event, the School of Quantitative Sciences (SQS) hosted an engaging workshop on innovation and commercialization on September 19, 2023. The workshop, known as "Bengkel Pengukuhan Inovasi dan Pengkomersilan SQS tahun 2023 – JELAJAH ICC," provided valuable insights into the world of innovation and entrepreneurship. The workshop witnessed diverse participation, with 80% of attendees originating from science and technology backgrounds, demonstrating SQS's dedication to nurturing innovation across a wide spectrum of academic disciplines. SQS, renowned for its expertise in quantitative sciences, underscored its connection with UUM's literary traditions, effectively bridging the gap between the humanities and technology. The Malaysian Ministry of Finance (MOF) displayed a keen interest in monitoring research impact through metrics such as ROI (Return on Investment) and ROV (Return on Value), emphasizing the need to translate research into tangible outcomes. Participants were encouraged to explore the concept of "SPIN-OFF," which involves creating businesses from the ground up. This opportunity was extended to a chosen group of individuals with exceptional potential. Additionally, participants were introduced to an entrepreneurship leave program, affording academics the chance to immerse themselves in entrepreneurial endeavors. Attendees gained valuable insights into the significance of intellectual property (IP) management. Discussions encompassed topics like copyright, licensing, outright sale, and grants, with a particular focus on participation in an Incubator Programme. The workshop featured a session on "Pengujian Harta Intelek" (Intellectual Property Testing), where participants had the opportunity to seek guidance from experts on how to validate their intellectual property concepts. As part of a self-assessment of their operations, participants were encouraged to complete a Business Model Canvas (BMC). A central theme of the event was creating value propositions and identifying the value that could be delivered to paying customers, highlighting the importance of customer-centric approaches to innovation. The workshop not only provided a platform for academics to explore innovation but also offered practical tools and insights for turning ideas into commercial ventures. SQS aims to foster a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation, aligning with the evolving landscape of higher education.
