The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme is designed to produce skilled graduates with in-depth knowledge in their related area of research to work independently, competently, creatively, innovatively and professionally. Simultaneously these graduates are able to use their new specialized capabilities to contribute to the body of knowledge for the benefit of mankind.
The learning outcomes of this programme are as follows:
- apply in-depth knowledge, advanced theories and models related to the relevant research areas.
- possess the ability to comprehend the problems, design and execute the research at the highest level of scholarship.
- synthesise advanced multidisciplinary knowledge to improve the skills in decision-making and problem solving as well as having to ability to be creative and innovative.
- communicate with experts and peers in related areas to spearhead advanced knowledge through research.
- possess high values and ethics, excellent attitude and leadership capabilities in academic and professional contexts.
- contribute to the development of knowledge through the production of quality dissertation and publications of international standards.
The programme is offered by full research. However, students without sufficient research skills and knowledge are required to enroll and pass the following courses during the first TWO (2) semesters of their enrolment (i.e. before being allowed to defend their thesis proposal):
- SZRZ6014 Research Methodology
- SCLE6014 Academic Writing
- Any other course as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee.
To complete the Ph.D. programme, students are required to:
- Present and defend the proposed research/thesis to a committee;
- Present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College;
- Produce at least TWO (2) articles, in (Option A or Option B).
- Attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and
- Submit a final thesis
- at least ONE (1) article is accepted for publication in ISI Journal or Scopus; and
- at least ONE (1) article is under review for publication in a refereed journal.
- TWO (2) articles are published in a refereed journal
Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme must possess:
- a master’s degree from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate; OR
- any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; AND
- fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.

Students are categorized based on nationality as Malaysian, ASEAN, and Non-ASEAN and are charged accordingly. Upon being accepted by the University, students shall make arrangements for their financial support and the payment of Student Fee throughout their study at the University. The Student Fee comprises of registration, tuition, accommodation and services. The Student Fee may be revised from time to time with prior notice being given to students. The Student Fee shall be paid within two (2) weeks after the commencement of each semester. Sponsored student must submit the Sponsorship Letter from the sponsor upon registration. The letter must clearly state the type of the fee covered under the sponsorship (such as registration, tuition, accommodation and services).
