YRQS2022 STRIVED TO NURTURE AND ENRICH YOUNG MINDS

Sintok, 11 January 2022 - The 4th Young Researchers’ Quantitative Symposium (YRQS2022) was organized virtually by the School of Quantitative Sciences (SQS) on 11th January 2022. Officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Kamal Mohd Nawawi, Dean of SQS, the symposium has provided a valuable platform to share and exchange knowledge of the most recent theories, issues, and practices in the field of quantitative sciences.

Focusing on creative and analytical thinking, this year, the theme of the symposium was “Nurturing Creative and Analytical Thinking Towards Sustainable Living” which successfully brought 43 presenters covering topics in pure and applied mathematics, applied statistics, and decision science, to name a few. Fitting with the symposium’s theme, Mr. Mohamed Amiruddin Jumaat, the founder of Wau Analytics, and Dr. Ruzelan Khalid, a research fellow at Institute of Strategic Industrial Decision Modelling (ISIDM), were invited to share their unique and vast experiences in the respective quantitative field of studies.

With emphasis on creative thinking and creative problem-solving among young researchers, this year, the YRQS2022 also hosted the Innovative Quantitative Analytics Solutions (i-QAS) competition. Seven teams formed by undergraduate SQS students had participated to solve a real problem designed by industry-academic panels.

The closing ceremony was marked by the official note from the chairperson of the YRQS2022, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nazihah Ahmad, followed by the announcement of the winners for the two respective categories: (i) paper presentation and (ii) i-QAS competition. Best paper presentation won by Madam Maizon Mohd Darus with video presentation entitled “A Direct Method Towards Constructing the Sixth Term of Wing Sequence”. Meanwhile, a duo team known as Hustle_S, won the i-QAS competition. The team came up with a project entitled “Action Plan on Aviation 2022” in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the domestic tourism performance in Malaysia.
